The Shaw Prize carries a monetary award of US$1-million and is presented annually in three areas: Astronomy, Life Science and Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences. The Shaw Foundation has issued a press release about the 2014 awards. Lusztig received the 1985 AMS Cole Prize in Algebra "for his fundamental work on the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type", particularly for his contributions to the classification of the irreducible representations in characteristic zero of the groups of rational points of reductive groups over finite fields. He was also awarded the 2008 AMS Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement.
